Our School Dog
"Eve helps me to feel calm. I like it when she is in school and I can go and see her." James
"I like it when she listens to me read, she sleeps on my feet." Nelson
"When I joined St Edmund's, I didn't like dogs and was very nervous of Eve. She has helped me to build confidence and now I have my own dog at home." Lissie
Hello,
My name is Eve and I am a Golden Retriever. I am three years old and I come to St Edmund's CofE Primary School for two or three days a week to spend time with the children.
My favourite toys are balls and stuffed toys. I like to play fetch with the children on the playground and snuggle up with my stuffed toy when I listen to children read.
My favourite snacks are biscuits and I can do lots of tricks for a reward. I can sit, give my paw, lie down, stand up and jump over small obstacles. The children are helping me to learn some new tricks. You can always teach a dog new tricks!
When I am in school, the children come to visit me in Mrs Stoneham's office and I will listen to them read, some children may be feeling upset and I help to make them feel calm and happy again. Some children have a very special document called an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) and I help these children in building up their self-esteem and speech and language skills.
There is a very nice lady called Jenny Duckwork at The Dog Mentor who trained me and Mrs Stoneham in positive therapeutic intervention when I was five months old, so that I can share my time with children.
When I am in school, I stay with Mrs Stoneham in her office and children come to see me. It is very important that I do not distract the children from their learning, however if I am really good I can walk with the children to the library on Fridays to help choose books to read and sometimes I can go on class trips.
If you are ever visiting St Edmund's and I am here, please come and say hello.
From Eve
